Duel on the Hill

Tips for Success

  • Start preparing for the competition as soon as you receive the case study!  Three weeks may seem like a long time to prepare, but your presentation will require an extensive level of practice and research in order to perform well.
  • Utilize multiple sources when conducting research!  Teams are encouraged to use outside sources, so contact experts within the field of research (i.e. insurance companies, credit card companies).  For example, when carrying out research for the sample case study, it would be recommended to call the financial office at Culver-Stockton College for advice.
  • Use visual aids!  Visual aids add a lot to a presentation.  Although you may use other forms of visual aids other than PowerPoint presentations, it is the recommended visual aid.  PowerPoint presentations look very sleek and professional.
  • Practice, practice, practice your presentation!  You should know exactly what you want to say during your presentation before you give it.  The more you practice it, the more comfortable you will be presenting it.  If you feel more at ease with notecards, use them.
  • Be clear and concise in your PowerPoint presentation!  The PowerPoint presentation should only include the key points of your solution.  These key points can then be elaborated on.
  • Be aware of the time limit!  You only have 15 minutes to give your presentation and you don't want to be cut off before you finish.
  • Exude enthusiasm!  The audience will be much more inclined to get involved in your presentation if it appears that you are enjoying yourself!
  • Think outside the box!  It's important to be sensible and realistic with your presentation, but it's also good to think of things that will set you apart from the competition.
  • Have fun!  The more fun you have, the more successful you will likely be!
